Majority vote in favor of same-sex marriage amendment

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The same-sex marriage amendment on this year’s ballots received majority support.
That’s according to the second printout, which showed 51.7% voted yes and 40.3% voted no.
It was the first question on all ballots statewide:
“Shall the state constitution be amended to repeal the legislature’s authority to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples?”
With the majority voting yes, this would change the state constitution and essentially affirm the right of same-sex marriage in Hawaii.
Nikos Leverenz, President of the Hawai’i Civil Rights Voter Education Fund, praised the historic nature of the amendment, calling it a “landmark day in Hawaii constitutional history.”
